Foods That Contain Phosphorus

Phosphorous is an important mineral for building healthy bones and teeth, and it performs vital functions in almost every system of the body. Fortunately, this important mineral is available in a wide variety of foods, and it is not difficult to obtain the requisite amounts.

Meat

All types of meat and poultry contain phosphorous. Eggs and organ meats such as sweetbreads, liver and kidney are also good sources of phosphorous.

Dairy

Dairy products are high in phosphorous. Milk, yogurt, hard cheeses, cottage cheese and mozzarella all contain significant amounts of this important mineral.

Fish

Fish and seafood, including halibut, tuna, salmon, mackerel, scallops, trout and caviar, are foods that contain phosphorous.

Grains

Phosphorous is found in whole grain and enriched flour products such as bread, pasta, oatmeal, millet, and wheat bran and germ. The phosphorous in these types of foods may be more difficult for the body to use than the phosphorous found in protein foods.

Other Foods

Other foods that contain phosphorous are almonds, peanuts, lentils, chocolate, yeast and carbonated drinks.
