What Is an Imbalanced Diet?

What Is an Imbalanced Diet?

An imbalanced diet is one that fails to provide the body with suitable amounts of different food groups and nutrients on a daily basis. People living in poverty or who have never learned about the importance of a balance diet, fail to eat properly. It is the opposite of a balanced diet, which includes a variety of foods from all of the major food groups, in appropriate amounts.

Causes

An improper diet is most commonly caused by a reliance on junk food, which is high in sugar or fat, fried foods, alcohol, desserts and white carbohydrates (white rice or refined flour). The second major cause is a general lack of fruits and vegetables, which are low in calories and provide lots of vitamins and minerals the body needs.

Problems

Over the long-term people consuming a poor diet can have problems with the maintenance of the body's tissues, problems with brain and nervous system functions, and problems with bone and muscle systems. Children may suffer behavioural problems, struggle to cope in school and have growth and development issues. People are also more vulnerable to general coughs, colds and illnesses.

MyPyramid

The Department of Agriculture publishes documentation on what constitutes a balanced diet and what Americans should try to eat more of. The online source, MyPyramid, shows different food groups represented as different colors, and suggests eating a combination of all food types; grains are orange, vegetables by green, fruits by red, oils by yellow, dairy by blue, and meats and beans are purple. It's a resource for those keen to change their diet and become healthier.

Variation

Different people need different food types and in different quantities. A combination of core food types is necessary but it's important to consider peoples age, gender and activity level. A balanced diet should also be supplemented by regular physical exercise and plenty of sleep.
