How to Garden with Mediterranean Plants

How to Garden with Mediterranean Plants

The typical Mediterranean garden takes advantage of the outdoor living space within the Mediterranean lifestyle. Therefore, one of the most important aspects in creating a garden with Mediterranean plants is to incorporate places to sit and eat along the plants. In order to garden with Mediterranean plants, you need to do more than just purchase the plants and place them in the ground. There are certain steps that need to be taken to achieve the Mediterranean atmosphere. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Pick out the type of plants you want to have in your Mediterranean garden. The typical plants for this type of garden include lavender, santolina, rosemary, bay tree, Italian cypress, geraniums, olive trees, cistus, jasmine, orange and lemon. Some are for beauty, and others are for the intense aromatic scents they provide the garden.

    2

Position the plants sporadically throughout the garden in between the furnishings and sitting areas to get the full effect of a Mediterranean garden. By positioning the plants accordingly, you are incorporating the various sitting and eating areas that are important in the Mediterranean lifestyle.

    3

Plant the plants according to the packaged instructions in either a raised bed with added drainage or a well-draining soil if you do not live in a climate like that of the Mediterranean. This type of climate is defined with characteristics of a dry summer and wet winter, so the plants are drought-tolerant once they have been established.

    4

Place hard landscaping that is constructed with terra cotta, wood, stone and ceramic tiles. This can include bordering around the plants as well as bordering around different areas for the garden that have different purposes; for example, to separate the eating area from the sitting area.

    5

Place large terra cotta jars and pots throughout the garden as ornamental pieces. Hang curtains from pergolas, add tablecloths to tables and cushions on benches with bright, rich colors as finishing touches for your Mediterranean garden.
